Персонажи сказки — антропоморфныеовощи и фрукты: сапожник Виноградинка, кум Тыква, девочка Редиска, мальчик Вишенка и т. д. Главный персонаж — мальчик-луковка Чиполлино, который борется против притеснений бедняков со стороны богачей — синьора Помидора, принца Лимона. В повести отсутствуют человеческие персонажи, так как мир людей полностью заменён миром фруктов и овощей. Также ни разу не упомянуто название страны, в которой происходит действие
