The Lena River is about 4,400 kilometres long. It is one of the longest rivers in the world and the longest river in Russia. The name "Lena" comes from an Evenki word <em>Elyu-Ene</em> meaning "The Large River".
The Lena begins in the Baikal Mountains and flows into the Laptev Sea, an area of the Arctic Ocean, in the north east of the Russian Federation.
The river only flows for part of the year because of the extremely cold local climate. On average there are 130 ice-free days in the year.
It is home to many different animals and birds.

Лена начинается в Байкальских горах и впадает в море Лаптевых (район Северного Ледовитого океана), на северо-востоке Российской Федерации.
Река течет только часть года из-за чрезвычайно холодного местного климата. В среднем насчитывается 130 дней в году без льда.
Здесь обитает много разных животных и птиц.
