В первом предложении unemployed употребляется как обобщение, т.е. Мой отец не один из множества безработных (в таком случае стоял бы артикль an), а безработный в общем смысле.
По этой же причине во втором предложении присутствует артикль a - Друг Люси (один из множества) адвокатов в Москве.
