Stress is what we experience when we believe we cannot cope effectively with a challenge. All people, and especially school children, experience stress in their lives.
Sometimes stress is good because it makes us do whatever it takes to solve the problem, it helps children to develop skills that they need to cope with new situations. But if a person experiences stress for a long time, this can harm the person's mental and physical health. People may start feeling irritable and angry, they may lack interest or motivation. Often stress leads to depression and that is really dangerous. Stress also affects our physical health: it raises blood pressure, lowers our disease immunity, causes heart attacks or strokes.
Stress is impossible to avoid but it can be managed. In order to cope with it and stay healthy we need to exercise regularly, sleep at least 8 hours each night and tell about our problems to relatives or friends. Laughing and listening to music that makes you feel relaxed and confident are also said to be good stress relievers.
