...In those days the best she could hope for was a career as a nurse or schoolteacher. When I was eight years old I was supposed to sell the 'Saturday Evening Post', thirty freshly printed copies, every Tuesday. Tuesday came and I took my magazines and went to the busiest street.
When it was supper time, I walked back to the house. How many did you sell?' my mother asked. спросила моя мама.'None' Ни одного'What did you do?' Что ты делал?'Stood on the corner waiting for somebody to buy a 'Saturday Evening Post' Стоял на углу в ожидании кого-нибудь, кто купит С.И.П.'You just stood there?' Ты просто стоял там?'Did't sell a single one' Ни одного не продал..'For God's sake, Russell!' Afterwards my mother instructed me in salesmanship. She told me to ring doorbells, address adults with charming self-confidence, pointing out that no one could be without the 'Saturday Evening Post'. И.П.But I didn't feel any aptitude for salesmanship. I rarely sold my thirty copies. Some weeks I had four or five unsold magazines on Monday evening. One rainy night I came back with not a single sale to report.
My mother told Doris, 'Go back down with Buddy and show him how to sell these magazines' Моя мама сказала Дорис "Возвращайся обратно с приятелем и покажи ему, как продать эти журналы"Doris, who was then seven years old, returned with me to the corner of the street. She took a magazine from the bag, and when the traffic light turned red she came to the nearest car and banged her small fist against the closed window. The driver, probably very suprised, lowered the window to stare, and Doris put a 'Saturday Evening Post' into his hand.
И.П. 'You need this magazine, and it only cost a nickel'. Her salesmanship was super. Before the light changed a few times she sold everything. I was so happy that I bought apples for her.
There are a lot of people who like animals. And many of them keep some animals at home. Such animals are called pets. They are cats, dogs, hamsters, white mice and so on. They know their masters and love them. And all the pets need their master’s care and love. Dogs can be good friends to lonely people, cats can cure some illnesses and bad mood. I love cats very much. I have one at home. My cat’s name is Alice. She is four years old, but she is rather small. Alice has very beautiful eyes and when it is dark in the room they shine. She likes to play and to sleep, but most of all she likes to eat. Some cats walk outdoors. My cat hates it. She thinks that a domestic cat should stay at home. But in general it is a cat that walks by herself.
