Sahara is one of the most large-scale deserts which are in North Africa. This desert occupies practically all North of Africa, having stretched its "sandy wings" approximately over 4800 km from the West to the East and from 800 to 1200 km from the North to the South; the desert has the area about 8,6 million sq.km. From the West Sahara is washed by the Atlantic Ocean, from the North it is surrounded by Atlassky mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, and from the East, the desert is washed by the Red Sea. From the southern border, the desert is differentiated by a zone of centuries-old sandy dunes, to the South from them is Sahel — a narrow strip of semi-deserts through which caravans from the Sahara Desert to lands of Sudan usually pass.
