До того, как европейцы прибыли в Америку, коренные Американцы, или индейцы, жили племенами. Племена были разные: некоторые сами выращивали пищу, некоторые питались пищей, которую могли найти. Также существовали племена рыболовов и охотников. Они жили в в домах из дерева - вигвамах, и думали, что вокруг были духи - в деревьях, горах, огне или воде. Духи могли приносить им удачу. Для того, чтобы задобрить духов, индейцы проводили церемонии с танцами и музыкой. Индейские песни и стихотворения помогали им помнить их традиции и историю. Многие коренные жители Америки в те дни не умели писать. Индейцы были сказочно добрыми, они надеялись, что будут жить счастливо на своей земле, на которой они смогут охотиться и ловить рыбу.
Европейцы захватили большую часть их земли. Индейцы сражались, чтобы отстоять свои дома, свой образ жизни и свою культуру. В 19 веке правительство Соединенных Штатов решило, что коренные жители Америки должны жить вдалеке от своих земель в резервациях. Многие индейцы по сей день живут в резервациях. Чаще всего они беднее, чем остальные американцы. В то же время они часто стараются сохранить свои традиции и язык. Регулярно проводятся фестивали, на которых индейцы выступают со своими танцами и музыкой.
