I think that nowadays knowledge of foreign languages is very important
for every educated person. English is the most widespread language, that’s way
I learn English. It is the language of politics and sport, science and computer
technologies, business and internet communication. English is also one of five
languages used in the United Nations Organization. The international ties between
the countries are getting closer. I’m very happy that now we have an
opportunity to participate in educational exchange programmes. We have a good
chance to organize school trips to language courses in different foreign
countries. If you want to know well English, you have to work hard. First of all it’s
necessary to learn grammar to make correct sentences. To increase my vocabulary
I should read books in English, watch films or programmes in the foreign
language. While reading or watching something it is good to look up unknown
words, expressions
in the dictionary and write them out in a notebook. And I should try to speak
as much as possible. I hope if I follow these simple rules I will know English
well enough.
The First Voyage of Columbus

Ocean to India. He didn't realise there was a huge continent between Europe and
Asia.
C In 1492, Columbus sailed across the Atlantic Ocean the Santa Maria, the Nina and the Pinta.
F He left the port of Palos in Spain on Friday, 3rd August and reached the Canary
Islands.
B Then he continued sailing west, and on Friday, 12th October the ships arrived in
the West Indies - so-called because Columbus thought.
G He stopped at the Bahamas, and then sailed to the islands of Cuba and Haiti.
A In January 1493 Columbus started to sail back to Spain.
D But the return voyage was difficult and often frightening
E Columbus finally reached his home port of Palos on 15th March 1493, after
voyage of and over 15,000 kilometres.
