Олицетворение наделяет неодушевленный предмет свойствами одушевленного: часы, как говорится, идут, но у автора они не просто идут, а шагают, а хрипящий бой передан как хворь и кашель. Метафора подразумевает скрытое сравнение, основанное на сходстве или контрасте значений. Поэтому у автора вещи наделены характерами, причем вещи повседневные – «вещи-труженики»: «демократический стакан», «интеллигент-термометр», «реакционная стеариновая свечка». Действительно, измерение температуры предполагает наличие хотя бы самых общих знаний из физики и медицины, а свечка в век развития электричества уже представляется чем-то устаревшим. В украшениях автор видит «что-то паразитическое», а в чайнике – «добродушного комика». Все эти определения говорят о наблюдательности и зоркости писателя, о его тонкой иронии по отношению к бытовым явлениям.
Показательной стала история пенсне. Приведя пример, как неожиданно теряются вещи, автор рассуждает об их намеренных действиях, когда они потом так же неожиданно находятся. Это юмористическое наблюдение сродни известному «закону подлости». Пенсне исчезло у автора во время чтения. Обыскав все карманы, кресло, книгу, автор его не нашел. Далее излагается история поисков пропавшего пенсне, дошедшая до генеральной уборки квартиры. «Вся квартира обновилась, посвежела – но пенсне не было». Приятель автора пытался разгадать загадку «индуктивным способом», начертив план комнаты и долго размышляя. Поиски таким путем тоже ничего не дали. Автор иронически замечает, как изменился характер его знакомого. Пенсне нашлось неожиданно, и писатель убежден, что это не курьезный случай. «Нужно было видеть физиономию моего пенсне, вернувшегося из дальней прогулки», чтобы понять, что это не случайность. Вещь одушевлена и имеет свой характер, и автор относится к ней как к существу одушевленному: «Я сильно наказал гуляку». Как у одушевленного существа бывает смерть, такова и смерть пенсне: «кончило это пенсне трагически», разбившись в мелкие осколки.
Такой подход автора к вещам интересен, его наблюдательность говорит о чутье художника, а речевая выразительность – о писательском мастерстве.
