Legends say that long ago the place where now stands the architectural jewel of England - Westminster Abbey, was called Horrible island. Here along the river Thames ran an endless swamp, overgrown with thick bushes. People here are not looking - not only afraid of wild animals, and monsters: they feel are absolute masters. However, there was a lot of fish, and fishermen, no, no, and visited Horrible island. Once, in a rainy Sunday night, here come the peasant Edric. Only he threw the network, as he was approached by a grey-bearded stranger and paying money, asked to carry him across the river to where the newly built Christian Church. The fisherman agreed and landed on the opposite Bank of the stranger began to see what happens. And then a miracle happened! The air suddenly emitted a bright light appeared from somewhere infinite ladder from earth to heaven. It descended angels. Each was holding a lighted candle in his hand. They all gathered around the Church and the choir began to sing. Here the stranger turned to Atiku and said that his name was Peter, and he is the Keeper of the keys to Paradise. And now he consecrated the Church that bears his name. Then Peter and the angels disappeared, and the Church continued to glow in the night.
In fact, the first Church on the banks of the Thames in 178 ad was built by order of king Lucius. During the following centuries the building has been rebuilt many times, destroying unsuccessful and carefully preserving the best of created earlier. Respect to the architectural tradition helped to create this wonder of the world.
Now the Royal family moved to another Palace - Buckingham, but the coronation takes place only in Westminster Abbey. Here are buried the ancient rulers of Britain and the most famous people. Among them - the writer Charles Dickens, mathematician Isaac Newton and biologist Charles Darwin.
