Dear Jill,
Thank you for your letter. I am glad to get it again. Sorry for not having written earlier but I was too busy at school. It is great that you were in China.
You asked me about Russian holidays. Well, I can say that the most popular holidays in Russia are New Year and Christmas but my favourite holiday is birthday. I am really enjoying this day. Usually I spend this day with my friends and relatives. No holiday is complete without gifts. I like giving gifts more than receiving them.
Sorry, but I have to go now, my best friend is waiting for me.
Write back soon!
Best wishes,

Izba is a Russian traditional housing. Izba is usually built of logs (pieces of wood). This type of housing was very popular, when slavic tribes were organized in one state. Everybody lived in izba (even Tsar) till people invented stone houses. Izba always had a so called "red edge". In that edge people had a red sewed towel called "rooshneek" and icons. This edge was holy. Also there were no beds in izbas, everybody slept on the benches or on the stove.
