In 1777, Joseph Montgolfier noticed that his shirt was floating upwards, so he came to the conclusion that smoke could lift things up. Then he, with his brother Jacques, started to invent first versions of hot-air balloons. They presented their first hot-air balloon on 19th September 1783, but were afraid to ride it, so they put a sheep, a duck and a chicken in the basket which was hung below. After a two-mile journey the animals landed safely, which meant that it was safe for people as well. The first hot-air balloon flight with human passengers was on 21st November 1783, which started a long tradition of hot-air ballooning.
