Red is the brightest and the most popular colour in Russia. In ancient Russia the word ‘red’ had the meaning of “beautiful”. And on special days and holidays the people in old Russia put on beautiful clothes: red shirts and red dresses. There is a lot of red colour in Russian folk costumes. The famous square in Moscow was called Red Square because it was very beautiful.
But in the Soviet times the red colour symbolized blood of the workers. A lot of red symbols appeared during the revolution in 1917: red flags, red five-pointed stars, the Red Army, red Pioneer scarves.
In modern Russia the red colour is the same as in many other countries. It is the symbol of love, energy and danger. When Russian traffic lights are red, pedestrians or drivers must stop. Russian men give red roses to their sweethearts to say “I love you”.
